i have to write a formal email to a man requesting an interveiw, the only information i have on him is this:
EDUCATION
University of Rhode Island: Ph.D., Biological Oceanography 1982
Graduate School of Oceanography, Kingston, RI: M.S., Biological Oceanography 1977
College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA: B.A., Biology 1973
GRADUATE ADVISOR: Howard Winn (deceased) URI
do i say, “dear Dr. _____” or “mr. ______”?
Yes, Dr. is the appropriate title in your email. Dr. is preferred over Professor. Different schools have different customs when it comes to “Prof” some prefer only “Full” Professors be addressed as such. Also, if the person isn’t at a university (or holds an admin title), they shouldn’t be referred to as Prof. Therefore Dr. is always the safest was to go. That said, most of us don’t care if someone calls us Dr. or Mr/s.
