Trinket Dish

Writing thank you letters. How do I thank someone when I don’t know what they gave me?
I would say “Thank you for the trinket box” — but it’s not a box. Maybe it’s a dish, about the size of a coaster (about 1/2″ deep) with a bird sitting on it. On the bottom it says “not for use with food”. What is it? A change holder? It’s really too nice to be a change holder.
No idea. It could be an ashtray. or a coaster holder. But just in case you don’t want to misuse it and get embarrassed at your family function, this is what you should write:
__________________________________________________________
Dear (insert name of person who sent it),
I must truly thank you for the gift you have sent me. I am very sorry to tell you that it broke. I really loved the dish and was sorry to see it broken when I got home from (insert somewhere you might have gone). I loved the litte bird on it!
(insert whatever goodbye you wish),
(insert your name here)
