Why The Ice Cream Truck Is Always Sweet

As a youngster cutting my teeth in the burbs, hearing the familiar and fascinating tune of the Mr Whippy van heading down my suburb was one of the highlights of my week.

Registering a faint sound in the offing, my small ears would prick up and I might become targeted on finding the culprit.

Was it truly? Might it be? As the truck made its way into my turf and rolled down the hill I would shoot up with excitement and run to find my parents, closely followed by my younger siblings.

Bobbing up and down in front of whichever legal guardian was unlucky enough to be the first to be found, we would yell “Can we get ice cream? ! Can we get ice cream pleeeeeeaaaaaaseee?!!”

More frequently than not, our respectful prayers were unfortunately knocked back, yet when that spellbinding day when my folks spilled the handful of change ultimately dawned, we were all smiles from ear to ear. What would we get this time? Who should go for the popcorn? Who was choosing the nut sundae? Were there any other flavours to try?

Now I’m all mature, I can not say that always have the same reaction each time I hear Mozart’s ‘Greensleeves ‘, but a familiar (albeit auto- muffled) sense of excitement takes over every time I see an ice cream stand.

While the tradition of the Mr Whippy wagon is definitely fading, the presence of ice cream stands and shops are still felt in cities, communities and at fairs and fetes all through Australia. And while lots of the traditional favourites are still holding their own, more exciting and modern flavours are usually taking the glory.

True to form, whichever ice cream store or stand you visit, you are sure to find something to satisfy the whole family. Whether it’s bubblegum for the boys, strawberry for the girls, or double-choc cookie dough for the teenagers, the range of styles and flavours of ice cream available frequently needs a five minute decision period in front of the display window.

I, personally, have turned into a boysenberry-in-a-waffle-cone sort of girl. Sure, the yearnings for the old choc top still remain, but selecting a pudding (or mid-afternoon treat) that covers one of my daily intakes of fruit is little short of a blessing. With an array of delicious gelatos and sorbets, there are even options for the lactose-intolerant.

While personal tastes and dietary wants may change, the sweet old school goodness of the ice cream stall remains largely the same. At your child’s college fete, your community fair and even on your trip to Luna Park, you are sure to find a conventional ice cream vendor offering all of your youthful favourites. From choc tops to snow cones, and fairy floss to multi-coloured popcorn, you can show your children how it was done in the ‘good old days’.

Ice cream is the treat for every age, and, after all , at least at one point in our lives, I screamed, you screamed, we all screamed for ice cream!
