How do you prepare a pumpkin to use as a serving dish for something like pumpkin mousse?

I saw an article in Taste of Home magazine that talked about using sugar and other stuff to prepare the shell, but I can’t afford the magazine.

Cut the top out and scoop out the insides so that it’s presentable. Make a simple syrup (equal parts sugar and volume, heated in a saucepan until dissolved). Dip a pumpkin in the syrup and cool on a tray with parchment. If you want to make it even better, add a couple cinnamon sticks or cloves, something like that, to the syrup…it will extract the aroma.

Why am I getting a thumbs down? The asker asked about the sugar method and that’s what it is. No, it isn’t necessary, but it makes the pumpkin shiny, it’s just a nicer presentation. Also protects the inside of the pumpkin from the mousse. If it isn’t a pumpkin for eating, it would be very bitter. If it was, it still wouldn’t be cooked, and probably wouldn’t taste that great.
