What Is The Henley Royal Regatta?
Set on the river Thames, it is a major rowing event that takes place once every year. it is also known my many people as Henley Regatta but it should definitely not be confused with other Regattas such as the Henley women’s one or that of Henley veterans. The first Regatta was organised in 1839, a few years after the success of the first Cambridge and Oxford ones. It was named Royal in 1851 after Prince Albert became the first royal patron to participate in the Regatta. All monarchs’s so far after Prince Albert’s death have agreed to be the official patrons of the event with no exceptions. For that reason, many royal family members tend to attend, although Queen Elizabeth does not have an active role in the events.
The events last for 5 days always in the first week of July, and attract crews and visitors from all around the world. Traditionally it has been a very prestigious events which definitely belongs in the biggest annual rowing events. Entries close 16 days before the opening day and applications have to be sent well in advance due to high demand. Planning well in advance is strongly recommended for the ones who don’t want to miss it.
The course, which was changed in 1885 and 1922 is not the distance from the Temple island all the way until Henley Bridge, which is about 550 yeards (or 500 meters). The event is also a very safe one because of the high number of volunteers that participate and form the health and safety teams. It wasn’t too long ago when it was decided that women could participate in the Regatta.
Henley Regatta has a big impact on corporate companies too as they tend to approach it as on of the major corporate events taking place annually. Corporate hospitality is another reason that attracts more and more companies and for some people the character of the event is being changing during the recent years.
