A COLOURFUL VALENTINE’S DAY IS IN GOOD TASTE

Don’t see red this Valentine’s Day. 
Yes, red is the traditional colour of passion, romance and of love, but who’s denying that love is (colour) blind ?Let your imagination run riot this Valentine’s Day – think out of the box and into the kitchen.
Think Pink.What about whipping on the apron and getting to work in the kitchen creating a pink platter to create the most romantic meal?For starters, you could cut heart shapes from brown bread and put cream cheese and smoked salmon on top.What about pastry cases overflowing with delicate prawns in a pink mayonnaise ?Add pink food colouring to mashed potato and create heart shapes on white plates, topped with gorgeous grilled salmon, followed by heart shaped meringue baskets filled with pink whipped cream and hulled strawberries .Sparkly pink champagne would be the perfect accompaniment.
Mellow yellow.How does a chilled glass of champagne and freshly squeezed orange juice with crisp mango sorbet sound ?   Or a romantic breakfast of creamy scrambled eggs or eggs benedict nestling in golden hollandaise sauce?
Or go back to black with a platter of fresh-from-the-sea oysters and caviar served with stout and champagne. 
If you’re keen for green, fresh avocado mousse or asparagus spears will sizzle the taste buds, especially if served with a small shot of chilled apple sours.A perfect combo would be spinach canneloni and basil pesto, followed by peppermint icecream and pistachio nuts.
You can show you are true with blue with a creamy blue cheese and berry platter, served with a glass of chilled Curacao liqueur.
You can also colour your love with an abundance of Valentine’s Day flowers from your local florist.Red rose buds if you are a traditionalist, but you could always consider bright yellow chrysanthemums, pink carnations, white lysianthus, purple alstromeria or orange daisies.Or demonstrate the intensity of your emotion with a brightly coloured mixed bunch.Have the courage to write your feelings on a card and present it together with a simple, hand picked bunch of flowers from the garden, or scatter rose petals to create a romantic atmosphere.
There’s little doubt that Valentine’s Day has become a commercial success, with frenetic buying of cards, flowers, chocolates and gifts for weeks beforehand.Restaurants will be over-full and over-priced.But if you want to declare your love, or just show you care, the sincerity of a home-cooked meal with gorgeous flowers and accessories to elevate the evening will be a sure winner.
