Why do my roses wilt and dry up before they open on the bush?

I have a Don Juan Climbing rose bush that used to produce beautiful flowers. But this year and last year the roses no longer open all the way before they die. What is causing this?

Since you call yourself “Southern” another possibility is “balling” which happened to some of my roses when I lived in Dallas. The buds got large, then the edges turned brown, and the “ball” of the rose never opened. For more info on this, I would call your local nursery or rose club.
