painting and sanding a car?

I have an Oldsmobile 98 Regency. I am looking to repaint it for fun because we are dumping it in a year. all the paint is still fine except for one little rust spot. because of the one rust spot would i have to sand down the whole car to the metal or can i just sand it down to the metal in just that spot. and also because the rust spot is so small, about 1/2 and inch in diameter would it matter if i sanded it down. And as for the rest of the car do i need to sand it down at all? or can i just paint right over the original color. i am looking to paint it white, the color now is a deep green.

None of the answers provided are correct if you want to do it right. Even if there is a rust spot the size of a quarter, the entire panel needs to be repainted to properly do this.

Step one: Sand the area surrounding the rust out to 6 inches around it using 320 grit sandpaper.

Step two: Sandblast the rust spot DIRECTLY until all you see is shiny, bare metal where the rust was.

Step three: Clean the already sandblasted area with a stiff wire brush.

Step four: Apply METAL GLAZE, not bondo/body filler over the area if it’s only surface rust. If it’s a whole, you will have to weld a patch.

Step five: Once the metal glaze sets, sand it with 320 grit sandpaper using a hard block. Repeat steps four and five until the proper the surface is finished properly (not wavy, body lines are true, conture is correct, no pinholes in the metal glaze). You may follow up with a final SKIM coat of bondo if you feel the need to, but again…NO PIN HOLES, make sure the conture is correct, etc…

Step six: Apply primer to the entire area where the metal work was done.

Step seven: After primer has set, wetsand the ENTIRE PANEL using 600 grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge

Step eight: Clean the surface using a wax/grease/silicone remover.

Step nine: Apply sealer (primer with a little extra hardener)

Step ten: Apply your basecoats

Step eleven: Apply you clearcoats and allow to cure

Step twelve: After paint has cured, wetsand out any nibs/runs/imperfections using 1500 grit sandpaper, taking care not to sand through the clearcoat

Step thirteen: Wetsand the entire panel with 2000 grit sand paper to remove any excess ‘orange peel’ texture

Step fourteen: Using 1500 and finer cut Rubbing Compound, buff the entire panel until the gloss is restore a bit (won’t be 100% glossy just yet, but should be damn close). Wipe off excess after working ALL MATERIAL with the electric buffer and powerwash residue out of the edges.

Step fifteen: Using a ‘polishing glaze’ with a grey foam pad and the electric buffer to further refine and shine the finish while removing any swirl marks from compounding. Again, clean and powerwash.

Step sixteen: Apply a Body Shop/Clear Coat safe wax…after three weeks (the time it takes for paint/clearcoat to cure fully), apply a high luster wax/paint sealant.
