What is the downtown area like around Busch Stadium?
I’m planning to go to the U2 concert at Busch Stadium next summer. I’ve never been to St. Louis before, so I don’t know what the Gateway City is like. And I was hoping if any St. Louisans here could chime in their input.
I’m looking into hotels in the area around Busch Stadium. There are a number of them on 4th St., which is one of the three streets in between the stadium and the Gateway Arch. The Millennium Hotel, the Hyatt Regency, the Hilton St. Louis Downtown, and the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch are a bit too pricey. I’m pretty interested in the Crowne Plaza St. Louis Downtown, as it is the cheapest that I could find so far.
How is the area in between Busch Stadium and the Gateway Arch? Would it be safe walking up 4th St. after dark?
And if any Missourians has other hotel recommendations in St. Louis, please let me know.
The areas that you are talking about are safe. After concerts there are lots of other people and police presence. The area beween the stadium and the Arch is fine but the Arch grounds arent open after dark so you probably wouldnt be going there at night. People walk around all the time in downtown after dark. There are tons of lofts in the area so people live there and there are also lots of offices and other businesses. My only advice would be to stay out of dark alleys or get too far off the beaten track. Stay south of Delmar/Convention Plaza. About the only thing you will have to contend with is some homeless who may ask for a handout. If you park your car in the area, be sure that nothing of value is in sight. We have a history of window breaking by thieves to grab electronics etc.
While the downtown hotels may be a bit high, you will have access to their secure garage parking and the convenience of being able to walk to the stadium is worth a lot. Traffic gets very heavy for big events and parking is very costly if you can find anything at all close.
