Red Dinnerware

Are You Healthaware About Dangerous Glassware?
Their colourful smiling faces may look innocent enough, but the character adorned surfaces of your favourite novelty glasses may be hiding a deadly secret: dangerous levels of cadmium and lead. The main concern about this problem dinnerware is that whether the products are explicitly marketed towards children, they’re likely to be users of the poison-laced products. The first company called out for Cadmium earlier this year was McDonalds, who recalled 12 million pieces of Shrek themed glassware because of the harmful metal’s presence.
Lead and cadmium have been locked in something of an industrial balancing act in recent years, particularly In the domain of children’s jewellery. Dangerous levels of lead were found in millions of pieces of cheap jewellery, causing a massive US-wide recall in August 2009. In constant contact with the skin, the worry was that children could easily ingest the harmful metal. Regulation of Manufacturers resulted in the switch to the equally undesirable cadmium instead. Cadmium can cause lung cancer, kidney disease and severe bone loss. Jewellery marketed specifically at children has been shown to contain as much as 90% cadmium in its composition.
Cadmium is used extensively in dyes, explaining the current concern over novelty glassware. It is particularly useful in the shocking primary red associated with the Coca Cola logo (among other symbols and characters). The American Associated Press report that blew the doors open on the scandal suggests that a six year old child could exceed the US government’s guidelines on blood-lead level by touching one of the offending products no more than twenty times. Superman, wonder woman and the cast of the Wizard of Oz are printed on the latest batch of offending glasses. The companies behind the manufacturer and sale of the items, Warner Bros. and Vandor, claim the items are not aimed at children. Whilst this is believable on some level, it’s not a safe assumption by any means. These glasses aren’t prohibited, adult only items like champagne flutes by any stretch of the imagination. Even if it were true that a child would never come into contact with these colourful items (which seems highly unlikely anyway), nobody wants to have dodgy metals lurking in their refreshing drink.
