purpose of college bowl football games?

Once the season is finished….what is the point of a bowl game? We know Ohio State is awesome, but the season is over…right? Jan. 7th bowl is for what purpose? I couldn’t find anything on-line besides stats etc.

championship game is monday. bowl games are rewards for college teams and their fans (not the casual viewer)… they are trying to catch more of an audience by actually matching up teams and make the games “mean something”.
