Can someone explain to me what was the point of the first test of the Large Hadron Collider was about?

It took place on September 10th, 3:15 AM I believe (EST time). Can someone tell me what was the point of doing that first test? What was it meant for? I know the whole experiment is to prove some stuff about the big bang, like what was there and what caused it, why somethings disappeared, but what was the purpose of that first test? Whats the first test meant for?

The first test is about working out some of the bugs. This is a very expensive, complicated (did I mention expensive) machine, and they don’t wan’t to damage it by over looking something simple.

They will slowly ramp it up over the next few weeks to full power. This ensures that all the parts and pieces work as advertised and gives them a chance to iron out any bugs or glitches that are unexpected.
