Scientists use several tools to classify information; they are called graphic organizers. Graphic organizers are exceptional because they give a visual picture of a topic and show how key concepts are related.　

Scientists use concept maps for organizing information that is broad in scope. Concept maps begin with a broad, central topic, and then the topic is broken down into specific concepts. The umbrella style layout correlates the various concepts, making the relationships between each easier to interpret and comprehend. The concept map typically has a layout consisting of oval shapes connected to other oval shapes. Each oval includes a word, usually a noun, which is linked to a specific category and related words. The most general concept is placed at the very top and words become more specific as this list move downward. The linked words show the connection between the two concepts. Some maps include linking words that connect a concept on one branch of the map to another branch; these show more complex interrelationships among concepts.　

Scientists use compare and contrast tables when they want to identify similarities and differences between to ore more items. The chart typically consists of square or rectangular boxes; boxes are positioned in descending order. The name of the process or procedure is at the top of the page. Steps or stages are imprinted in each rectangular box (one step per box) and placed one after the other. Arrows are placed between each square to link each event to the next.　

Like a flowchart, a cycle diagram can help with comprehending the order of events or a procedure. However, they differ from flowcharts in that cycle diagrams show a sequence of events that is continuous. The outlined event does not have an end because when the last step is taken, the first event begins again.
