A person whose foramen ovale remains open does not have complete separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. Therefore, in this person there would be more deoxygenated blood circulating in the blood stream than in that of a person with a normal heart. The body would probably try to compensate by having the heart beat faster (increased heart rate). Most often now, however, doctors discover this condition and operate very quickly to correct it.
