will a needle on a compass point north if in a southern hemisphere?

We know a compass points northward because the earth is a giant magnet.
Will the northward pointing needle point northward when the magnet is
brought to the southern hemisphere?

Yes, but…It points to magnetic SOUTH which is geographical North. The pointer is a magnet that will align its south pole to the field’s north pole. The magnetic field is defined as “leaving” the North pole of a magnet and “arriving at” the South pole. So when your compass points to North, it is indicating where the South pole of the magnet is located.

This magnetic North is really geographical South confuses most students the first time, but it is relatively easy to see if you play with a few magnets and watch how they line up.
