Large Christmas

Large Christmas
Is it illegal to have a large Christmas display?

I’m planning on making a large display and is there a limit to how bright it is. I’m also wondering about cycles and how fast it can run until it is considered a strobe effect. I am located in AZ.

I’m in Phoenix and can find no legislation limiting Christmas displays (in fact, most legislation about lighted signs and displays specifically excludes Christmas decor). If you have a homeowner’s association, they may have additional rules and regs about what can and can’t be done, so check with them. Otherwise, I think you’re good.

There’s always the exception, though. If your display will increase traffic on your street, your neighbors could file a complaint. If your display includes music, your neighbors could file a complaint. This happened to a young man in Scottsdale whose Halloween and Christmas displays were valley legend. New neighbors moved in to the house next door and complained, with the result he was forced to turn off his displays and eventually moved. He was also convicted of a misdemeanor disturbing the peace charge, had to pay a fine, and served two years of unsupervised probation.
