How do you replace gold trim on a table? Can you paint it?

I recently inherited a table, it’s brown wood with a gold trim around it – super 80s and ugly looking, I don’t know what the trim is made of but it’s shiny – metal maybe? I plan to paint the table black to match the rest of my furniture, but I don’t know what to do about the gold colored trim. Can I remove it? Replace it with silver? Paint it? Help..

Most trim is T shaped plastic with a barb fitted into a slot. Once its pulled out the particle will be damaged a little and will fail to trim hold again without adhesive. Work in cabinet factory.
