Caravan site broken up and squatters forced to leave

Heavy machinery and bulldozers were deployed to the site in an early morning operations after the government Property Division followed up its written warning to the Evesham caravan owners.

Large cranes lifted the caravans on to trailers whilst the bulldozers smashed up the brick buildings and the stands for the caravans. Preventiion may well have been the better option, with the benefit of hindsight. Had the owners invested in concrete barriers, the eviction would never have needed to happen.

No incidents were reported during the operation which continued as a number of owners, probably alerted about what was taking place by fellow owners, arrived on site to empty their permanent structures or take the caravans away themselves.

The operation was a joint effort between the police, the Public Works, the UK Environment and Planning Authority and the Land Department.

The owners of the structures were warned on Monday by means of a notice fixed on walls at the site to remove their caravans. Site clearance is a tough business, and is usually contracted out to the private sector, where there is generally more experience available.

At its peak, there were probably nearly 300 caravans onsite but only just over a hundred notices were delivered because many of the people had already left. Since earlier warnings were given, many squatters had already moved away from the site. The owners were given 48 hours to remove their caravans from the site.

A strong police contingent was present at the entrance to the road leading to the site, where members of the police Special Assignment Group and general security guards were quite closely positioned to the caravan site itself. More policemen could be seen close to the caravan site, where the demolition process was in progress. Police Commissioner Andrew Wright was also present.
