Coffee Cups – A Handful of Convenience
Disposable coffee cups have been in the firing line in the past due to the impact they have on the environment. The most common of these being made from a plastic based Styrofoam non-biodegradable material.
Taking just the U.S into consideration, it is estimated that about 25 billion Styrofoam cups end up in the garbage. It is worth remembering that every Styrofoam coffee cup can take up to 500 years to break down, so once its in landfill, its there for a few hundred years. With that in mind, you can see why some people have leaned away from them in the past.
This resulted in many café owners leaning away from using disposable coffee cups. With the introduction of new biodegradable coffee cups hitting the market, disposable coffee cups are coming back into fashion.
With a great reduction in the time taken to decompose, disposable coffee cups are now more enviro-friendly than ever!
This new technology developed in the US by popular brand Green Mountain Coffee along with International Paper, who are working together to produce a coffee cup that is coated with corn-based material.
When the cup is ready to be disposed, the coating is cleared off and ready for throwing away. With the new environmentally friendly coffee cups, café owners no longer have to worry about their impact on the environment.
Being environmentally friendly is only one of many benefits of using disposable coffee cups.
Firstly, disposable coffee cups are a lot cheaper compared to ceramic coffee cups.Besides being heavier, inconvenient for take away and not easily disposed of, no customer wants to pay an extra few dollars for the ceramic cup the coffee would come in.
Unless is the order is to be consumed on the premises, it makes much more sense for coffee shops to use light, cheap disposable coffee cups for their customers to take away.
Another advantage of disposable coffee cups is the large range of sizes and styles. Since disposable coffee cups are cheaper to produce and are purchased in larger quantities by more people, manufacturers can come up with varied sizes and designs to provide to their customers. Café owners can then offer different sizes of coffee to their customers, from small to jumbo!
The low cost of paper coffee cups manufacturing means that coffee cups are relatively cheap to buy and even cheaper when you buy in bulk. This means that coffee vendors can offer lower prices for their coffees to their customers (although not all do).
On top of this, their disposable nature means that you don’t have to spend long amounts of time cleaning them up. There is no need to wash, stack or worry about breaking disposable coffee cups, which saves café owners a lot of money over times since they don’t have to spend on dishwashing soap, staff time or related utility expenses.
Many café’s are now turning back to using disposable coffee cups for these very reasons. Next time you’re getting your coffee on the go, don’t be surprised of you get it handed to you in a paper coffee cup.
