CHANGLANG: PARADISE UNEXPLORED
Covering an area of 4’663 sq km this splendid valley holds in it the historic Stilwell road built during WW-II that wanders off to Myanmar and China. If you wish to pay homage to the brave soldiers of WW-II visit the Jairampur WW-II Cemetery. A massive burial ground on a 3 acres spread, with about 1000 graves of allied soldiers of China, Taiwan, India and Myanmar.
Another slice of history that must be savored by tourists visiting Changlang is the Vijay Nagar Stupa- a Hinayana Buddhist Stupa of 18th century with octagonal platform that describes the Buddhist culture of Hinayana sect.
Changlang is pristine beauty full of green valleys, beautiful hills and rare flora and fauna. You can explore them all at the Namdapha National Park spread over an area of 1985.23 kms. Want to know what’s unique here? The park covers a wide range of altitude from 200m to 4500m. Namdapha is the only national park in the country where four felines are found. Imagine the thrill of spotting a tiger, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard in the same place! And if you’re lucky enough you can also see the white winged wood duck, a rare and endangered species only found here.
Changlang is also unique for its traditions and languages. Many dialects of the Changlang district are endangered – in fact some dialects are already extinct. To bond perfectly with the people of this exotic place visit Miao. Situated on the banks of River Noa-Dehing this place takes you closer to Changlang’s daily life. Wanna shop? There is a Tibetan refugee settlement at Miao where colourful woolen carpets of various designs are produced. Take some back home.
Come to shopping the Pangsau Pass Border Market is also a must visit. As the name suggests it is the center of border trade between India and Myanmar. You can pick conventional and contemporary goods of China, Myanmar and India from here. Wait, the surprises are not over yet. To get up-close and personal with nature visit the Butterfly Conservation Park at Changlang. Spread over 70 hectare of tropical rain forest this is a solitary conservation area of butterflies in the entire north-east. It also offers trekking tracks and rare glimpses of wildlife tour. And when you’re done with butterflies go boating on the mysterious waters of the Lake of No Return (this lake falls in Myanmar, so you may need permissions), popular for the myth that anything that comes within its periphery disappears.
