China Mandalay

China Mandalay
china planning to build a HSR from Beijing to London?

China anounced that they are negotiating with 17 countries to build a HSR from Beijing to Europe so that it will be a two day trip from London to Beijing.

A potential route was not released. I think the first part is easy (Kunming China to Mandalay , Myanamar, then to Dhaka Pakistan, and on to New Delhi.

It’s not obvious from there? Islamabad or Karachi? Tehran or north of the Caspian Sea? Cross the Caspian Mountains, or Turkey and into southern Europe? What do you think?
It is a 10 or 11 hour flight if you go nonstop depending on which direction.

The train could be 44-48 hours, so it will be four times as long. But it would probably be much better on the environment.

The problem with this is that it has to cross areas with very unstable governments/terrorist problems – Afghanistan possibly, Iran, some of the former ex-Soviet Republics. Of course, a route already exists from Beijing to London – via Mongolia and the Trans Siberian. I would have thought that if this is a real proposition, then that would be the way to go. As for the Chinese taking over the world, hasn’t that already happened?

I must admit I do not understand the comments in the 1st answer about ‘a track that long’ encountering problems – other than geo-political ones.
