Bitter Sweet
Is the plight for Black Immigrants to America bitter sweet?
On one hand — since they are immigrants, they are expected to assimilate to an extent, take advantage of the opportunities, etc…
On the other hand, since they are black, they are expected to defy the dominant culture given the history of oppressing blacks.
If they choose to identify more with immigrant status, they are unfairly criticized, judged and harassed. If they choose to identify more with the black struggle, they are outcasted even more; by the dominant culture and by black people as they are still different/foreign.
I indulge in ma african culture, but i love and relate to african americans way more! For me it’s not about struggle because all blacks struggle across the globe! I feel blacks and all minorities have been assimilated enough, so it’s VERY offensive for people to criticize and judge me for the way i talk and act! The fact that you say DOMINANT culture is more of a reason for me to be a rebel! Nobody is dominant ova me! I was born in AMERICA and when me and my, african american, husband have children, our children will be african american! I’m not TRYING to fit in with anyone! I’m not biased, so i have opinions about both africans and african americans!
