A Visit To England’s Lake District

The Lake District continues to be a popular tourist destination, with thousands of people heading there each year, and with so much to see and do here it’s easy to see why tourists keep returning. Stunning scenery, a diverse landscape and the opportunity to take part in outdoors activities are just some of the reasons why people are so attracted to this beautiful part of England. There’s also a wide choice of places to stay making this a well-equipped area for tourism.

So what is it about The Lake District that makes it so popular year in year out? The obvious attraction to begin with is the lakes themselves, which are dotted around the region and give the area a sense of open space and freedom. You can participate in a wide range of water sports on some of the lakes so if you enjoy canoeing or kayaking, rowing or sailing then this makes a great location to indulge your hobby. If gentler pursuits are more your style then you could simply pitch up next to one of the lakes and enjoy a picnic surrounded by beautiful scenery.

The fells are an obvious reason that people travel to the Lake District and the area is considered to be the birthplace of modern mountaineering. There is an extensive network of public footpaths and generally unrestricted access to the mountains and fells. The famous Wainwright walking guides plot the various recreational walks and certainly the area’s beauty inspired the Romantic poets Wordsworth and Coleridge to put pen to paper.

Outdoor recreational activities are another reason why people flock to the area. The opportunities for hiking, cycling, mountain biking, water sports and rock climbing/abseiling etc are abundant and the natural landscape is perfect for all of these pursuits. Some would say that the Lake District is the UK’s biggest outdoor adventure playground! And with lots of cosy pubs and restaurants to try out after a day of activity, there’s no better place to enjoy some fresh air followed by a spot of evening relaxation.

While the ‘outdoors’ nature of the Lake District is often emphasized not everyone knows that the area is also good for arts and culture. Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum is open to visitors and it was in this part of the country that Wordsworth wrote his famous poem ‘I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud’ inspired by the beauty of the landscape. The World of Beatrix Potter Museum is another favorite attraction. Children and adults alike will enjoy exploring the life of the famous writer in this interactive museum.

Miss Potter walks that fine line between charming and cloying with pleasing sure-footedness. Apple-cheeked Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones’ Diary) once again slips into a British accent to play writer/illustrator Beatrix Potter, the creator of Peter Rabbit.
