Snap Up A Weekend At The Isle Of Wight With Red Funnel

Ever fancied yourself as a bit of a dab hand with a camera? Maybe even the next David Bailey? If you want to be in with a chance of winning some great prizes, as well as showing off your best camera skills you will need to get snapping what you think are the best sights in the Isle of Wight. The ‘Your Isle of Wight’ video and photography competition, sponsored by Red Funnel, is running from August to December, challenging videographers and photographers from far and wide to stake a claim and submit something that encapsulates what the Island means to them.

There are so many great sights to be found in the Isle of Wight, making it difficult to decide what you want to photograph next. If you’re struggling for inspiration, check out this list of some of the top attractions that the Isle of Wight has to offer:

Isle of Wight Steam Railway

A great attraction for the whole family that takes in some fantastic sights along the way. Go from Wooton to Smallbrook Junction in this classic train and pass through Havenstreet and Ashley along the way. You could even have a go at camping or caravanning on the nearby site for a real British holiday experience!

Osborne House East Cowes

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were known to frequent this stunning English Heritage-maintained building. Make a visit to the Swiss play cottage and Victorian walled garden for some great photo opportunities, as well as excellent tours.

Compton Bay Beach

Compton Bay is truly one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK.This sandy beach is surrounded by a gorgeous coastline and towering cliffs that go on for as far as the eye can see. The beach is a great bathing spot and never gets too crowded, making it perfect for those lazy summer days.

Carisbrooke Castle

A real ‘must-visit’ attraction on the island. Once prison to King Charles, this royal castle was also once the residence to Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria. Head down and take a fascinating tour where you can learn more about its infamous history, including the donkeys working the well in the Medieval Wellhouse.

Ventnor Botanic Gardens

This is a fantastic shooting spot with beautiful floral displays and even exotic plants from around the world. The charming Steephill Cove is nearby as well and is another real beauty spot. And entrance to the grounds is completely free!

The Model Village, Godshill

Model villages always make great photo opportunities, and the one located in Godill is fantastic.Unwind and relax with a coffee and watch the world go by in this picturesque village. Don’t forget to have a go at the leaf picking in the tea gardens as well.

There are four categories for the photo competition; lifestyle, nature, constructed and juniors. Monthly winners in each category will win return travel to the Isle of Wight for a car and four passengers, and in December 2010 the overall winners will be announced in the final prize draw and can look forward to receiving 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes of London Camera Exchange vouchers worth £700, £200 and £100 respectively. The video competition is split into two categories, adult and junior, and entrants should compose a two to five minute video about anything on the Island, whether it is a favourite cycle path, places to hit the waves or simply a fantastic place for some local food. The overall winner will receive a £1,000 London Camera Exchange voucher, while category winners will receive a £250 Red Funnel Travel Card.

If you need to get to the Isle of Wight though, Red Funnel can get you there faster than you can say snap!  Vehicle ferries run regularly from Southampton, which is within easy reach of the M3 and M27. Return fares start from just £34 for a car of up to 6 people. To enter, for full conditions and for more information about the competition visit www.redfunnel.co.uk.
