Stones Rock Ahead Toward Their Sixth Decade

Cutting albums starting in the early ’60s, the Rolling Stones have spent many hours in the studio.  And just about since they began, their records have been extremely popular. Their musical pieces are mostly written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, who have been a writing pair since the Stones’ earliest days. Remaining close to the music that inspired them, the Stones’ records still are heavily influenced by blues, rhythm and blues and old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. Despite changes in pop music fashion, the Stones have continued to remain on top.

Some musicians of the first lineup have exited. Of the first members, only Jagger, Richards and Charlie Watts are currently in the band. In 1969, Stones guitarist Brian Jones exited the band and shortly thereafter died, and bass player Bill Wyman retired from the band almost 20 years ago. The group now includes guitarist Ronnie Wood and bass player Darryl Jones, who is not a full member of the Stones.

The Stones first became popular in the United States during the early 1960s “British Invasion,” which was spearheaded by groups such as the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five and Jerry and the Pacemakers. The Stones cultivated a unique identity with their raw, unpolished sound that displayed an affinity for American blues music. Indeed, members of the band respected such American performers as Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf and B.B. King.

To make their mark, the Stones worked to be labeled as the converse of the Beatles. Embodying their harmless prankster image, the Beatles were a pleasant if shaggy group of young men. Unsmiling in photos and album covers alike, the Stones’ detached appearance became the new definition of what was in.

Because Decca Records had rejected the Beatles and severely regretted it, the Stones were able to negotiate an outstanding contract.  The band was paid three times the typical royalties bands received in those days, had full artistic control of their recording and owned the master tapes that they recorded.  The gamble paid off for Decca, when Rolling Stones vinyl began flying off the shelves.

The Stones’ pact also allowed them to pick their recording studio. They laid down tracks at the world-renowned Chess studios in Chicago while they were on their first U.S. tour.

If you’re hearing the Stones on vinyl, you might want to consider Rega turntables. A great British band ought to be played on a terrific English turntable, and that is what Rega is. You’ll pick out all of the group’s nuances on a Rega.

You’ll probably decide to dial up the volume, no doubt, when you’re enjoying the Stones. If you’re listening through headphones, be sure to avoid turning music up so high that it injures your hearing. Be wary of ringing in your ears, which probably is a sign of hearing damage, and a sign that you need to turn down the volume.
